Working for Research, Industry and the Public Sector

See also: Consultancy, Training, and Project Partnerships.

Background

The SSC provides consultancy and training to the research and development arms of a range of industries, research establishments and the public sector. This can involve us working directly with an individual research scientist, a project team or sometimes an on-site statistician. The work can be very varied, but our consultants are accustomed to rapidly assimilating and understanding background information in order to address the statistical issues. Wherever possible we support and work with in-house statisticians and data managers.

Experience

You are welcome to inspect some examples of our work.

SSC staff are accomplished trainers, accustomed to providing support at a range of levels from the relatively inexperienced user of statistics through to experienced statisticians.

Our computing expertise is extensive, with staff having detailed knowledge of statistical software packages including SAS, SPSS, STATA, Genstat, Minitab, Instat, WinBugs, MLwin, R and S-Plus, as well as high-level competency with Microsoft Excel and Access. We can therefore often work with clients using software that they are already familiar with or have ready access to.

Services

The SSC provides a range of statistical consultancy services, including review work, the provision of on-site help desks and call-down contracts, as well as one-off pieces of work where we may be advisers on study design, sampling, statistical analysis, data management and reporting.

We can advise on and participate in training programmes for project teams or individual researchers, as well as providing tailored training courses. Commissioned courses can be run either on-site or at the SSC's own purpose-built facilities.
